Infrared asphalt repairs or infrared patching uses heat to aid in removal and adhesion of new material to the patched area. The infrared machine is placed over the damaged asphalt with the proper sized heating plate and radiation is absorbed by the asphalt to increase pliability and allow removal of the damaged asphalt, course by course.
Edges of the patches must be squared off and tapered to make a long-lasting repair. The squared and tapered edges allow for increased surface area to bond the new asphalt to the surrounding existing asphalt.
Once the new hot mix asphalt is installed the patch and edges are heated again to allow bonding of the new patch and existing asphalt pavement.
